Gibsons' George Vourtsis put it all on the line last Friday night in Langley, coming up just short in his chance at the Canadian title.

Vourtsis battled with Lucas Rowe of Kitchener Ont. for the World Boxing Council's (WBC) Canadian Amateur Boxing championship at Cascades Casino in Langley.

Vourtsis tried throughout the fight to get in close to the rangy Rowe who was at least six inches taller. While Vourtsis stunned Rowe a few times, it was not enough, as Rowe used his physical attributes to hold Vourtsis at bay.

"Rowe is a seasoned, stylish, southpaw boxer who last month won two of three bouts at the Ringside World Boxing Championships in Kansas City," said Sunshine Coast Boxing Club spokesman Rick Shannon. "A special mention goes out to trainer Todd Alain who worked early mornings and evenings preparing him for his bout for six weeks."

Accompanying Vourtsis to his Langley title fight were more than 30 boisterous supporters from Gibsons.

Rowe now advances to the WBC World Amateur Boxing Championships in Hungary next year.

Vourtsis and other Coast boxers will continue to battle B.C.'s bestin a build-up to the War on the Shore II event to be held in Gibsons April 26, 2014.

George would like to thank his sponsors, GV Designs, Coast Moving and Sunshine Lodge.
