Team Red captained by head pro Mike Hobson and Chris Lutes defeated Team Black captained by Kevin Krake and Blake Mithrush 16-12 to claim the Morgan Cup at the Sechelt Golf Club earlier this month.

The event, held over the Labour Day long weekend, is a memorial event hosted by the club in honour of John Morgan.

"John was an assistant pro at our club from 2002 until 2007 when he passed away from cancer," said Hobson. "Johnny was a great man and a great golfer in his day. He played on the PGA tour for a season in 1972. He is still held in high regard among Canada's best players from his era."

The format for the event was similar to the Ryder Cup with 24 players and four captains on the two, 14-man teams. Over the course of the weekend there was 14 matches played, each worth two points each.

Team Red included: Ryan Dixon, Bruce Bryan, Norm Talbot, Bryan Airth, Blake Cyr, Lance Barnard, Matt Cookney, Kevin August, Michael Beals, Brandon August, Gerry Dakin and Dave Ballie, while Team Black included: Ken Collard, Rick August, Bob Small, Wes Newman, Clyde Higginson, Ron Caldwell, Jeff James, Jim Goodwin, Darren Dixon, Murray Milroy, Ron Goos and Arnie Weibe.

"The Morgan Cup is by far the most sought after trophy at the club," added Hobson. "The members have great respect for Johnny and love the chance to play for his memory. The golf course was in spectacular shape all weekend and set up great for match play. All 28 players said it was the best Morgan Cup yet."
