Callum Rive places first for the second race in a row in the boys’ snowboarding competition at the latest high school race in Whistler on Jan. 10.

The Chatelech ski and snowboard team is off to a great start with more than half of the team placing in the top 10 at its second race of the season last Friday (Jan. 10) in Whistler.

The boys’ snowboard team swept the podium with Callum Rive claiming top spot, Quinn White in second and Levi Pearl in third. Jasper Deasey placed fourth in his first race of the season.

Callum and Quinn also had a one/two finish at the team’s first race on Dec. 19.

In girls’ snowboarding, Pearl Deasey was first racing against a tough, wide-open field of competitors in grades 8 through 12.

In boys’ skiing, Jason Fournier further added to the Chatelech medal haul with a second place finish, while in the girls’ competition, Ingrid Bryson placed fourth, Teal Randal sixth, Cora Schnippering seventh and Nicole Roesser 10th.

Team coach Kirsten Deasey, who is co-coaching the team this year with husband Rob, is thrilled with the team’s performance to date.

“The team is doing great,” Kirsten said. “In our last race there were a total of 89 competitors racing. Our team is small with only 18 on our roster, 13 who attended last race. The competitors are also not divided into grades, so Grade 8 students are racing against students in Grade 12. Our team has worked very hard with dryland training where we work on strength, agility and conditioning.”

Chatelech has four more races to go in the six-race regular season. Next race is Saturday, Jan. 24.

Deasey said the team’s first goal is to qualify for the provincial championships with a strong showing at the North Shore championships set for Feb. 12. The provincials are in early March in Revelstoke.

“My husband and I have coached about half the members of the team previous to this year. We have watched them learn and grow in their skills and performance over the years,” she said. “Another neat thing is that every year we have coached, we have had exchange students. This year we have three girls on the team from Germany. They are really enjoying the chance to experience the league and our amazing mountains.”
