SCMHA grads making waves around the province

Tyler Graham scored a great short-handed goal for the Dawson Creek Junior Canucks in a Nov. 28 game against Fort St. John. Tyler is one of several Sunshine Coast players who are making an impact on junior teams throughout the province.

Junior hockey leagues from around the province continue to benefit from products of the Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association (SCMHA).

Kyle Horseman is captain of the Cowichan Valley Capitals of the British Columbia Hockey League. He is one of the top scorers with 16 goals and one assist in 39 games. Cowichan Valley heads into this weekend with a record of 15-24, good for fifth spot in the Island Division. The squad is hoping for a better second half to fight its way back into the playoff picture.

Horseman is currently entertaining a number of offers from NCAA schools, but as yet has not committed to any school.

The Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League is loaded with Coast talent.

Braedon Cross is leading the Kerry Park Islanders in scoring with 20 goals and 28 assists in 36 games. The Islanders sit third in the South Island Division at 13-19.

Blake Pearson is the starting goalie for the Comox Glacier Kings. He has a record of 7-7-1 in 19 games and 3.38 goals against average. He was named to the league all-star game in early December.

Comox has a record of 18-13-1 and is in second place in the North Island Division.

Ben Meyerink is a winger with the Peninsula Panthers. He has one goal and two assists in 29 games for the Panthers who have a record of 10-27 and sit in fifth place in the North Island Division.

Defenceman Tyler Graham started the season with the Nanaimo Buccaneers and didn’t register a point in three games. He was traded on Sept. 20 to the Dawson Creek Junior Canucks on the Northwest Junior Hockey League where he has excelled with the team, picking up two goals and eight assists in 19 games. The Junior Canucks sit with a record of 10-8-2 and are fourth in the league.

Centre Therin Hemstalk started the season with the Glacier Kings where he had one assist in 17 games. He was traded to Dawson Creek Nov. 14 and has one assist so far.

Tyler and Therin have now played together for 14 straight seasons.

And centre Kyle Bergh has five goals and six assists in 17 games with the Princeton Posse of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

The Posse is third with a record of 17-15-2.
