Have you seen a fleet of small boats on the water of Porpoise Bay on Wednesday and Sunday? Wonder who they are? Ever been interested in sailing with them?

The Sunshine Coast Sailing Association (SCSA) is looking for new members to come out and learn how to race the laser class sailboat on Porpoise Bay.

The SCSA officially started five years ago with the mission to promote sailing and racing on the waters of Sechelt Inlet using the Laser Standard dinghy class sailboat.

The laser is a 14-foot sailboat that was initially designed by Canadians Bruce Kirby and Ian Bruce. It’s sailed all around the world from the average sailor to world-class athletes in the Olympics.

The club decided on the laser as it is one of the most common, popular, robust, simple to rig and easy to sail vessels around – it’s also incredibly fast for its size. There have been about 215,000 lasers built. Used lasers are also pretty easy to find.

The club currently has one laser and moorage available for purchase and another moorage spot on SCSA floats available for the club.

All you need to know is the basics of sailing, have a love for being out on the water and a commitment to a summer of racing the laser with the SCSA.

Membership to the club is free, and anyone with a laser is welcome to race. The club charges only for moorage on SCSA floats.

You can visit the club’s website at www.suncoastlasers.com or phone Denis Olson at 604-741-1096 for more information.
