Runners crack five-minute mile

Several runners cracked the five-minute mile barrier at the Gibsons Sea Cavalcade Mile on Saturday, July 28. The annual race clears the way for the Cavalcade parade, and this year 144 runners swept through Upper Gibsons, the second-highest number of competitors in the race’s history. Matthew Winkler of Victoria took home first place with a time of 4:19, while the top female finisher was Parksville’s Alycia Butterworth. The top local male was Nick Duff from Sechelt, who ran the mile in 4:52. Gibsons’ Sacha Stipec was the first local female to cross the finish line in a time of 5:45.
