On June 22 the Sunshine Coast Ravens hosted a doubleheader as Coquitlam Tigers visited Hackett Park for some Special O softball action.
One might expect the Tigers to be weary after an early-morning ferry trip, but they came to play and immediately started scoring runs with good hitting. While the first mini-game was only three innings long, the Tigers scored 11 runs, led by two runs from Brad and two from David D. Gus Vaughn was able to lead off with a home run for the Ravens, but they could only add one more run, as the Tigers took care of business in the field. Tigers won game one 11-2.
The teams continued the tradition of a BBQ luncheon and social time in between games, and it seemed to energize the home team.
In the second game, the Ravens defence was determined and made numerous heads-up defensive plays, highlighted by Antonio Hovden’s smooth plays at second and Dustin Archer snagging a line drive for a big out. The bats were also charged, as every player found a way to get on base, and Gus, Antonio and Derek Pye each scored twice in a 7-2 win.
As always, the outcomes were not the important part of the day – it was the camaraderie, sportsmanship, friendship, and the love of sport.
We all look forward to next year’s battle!
