Members test ‘n’ tune to open season

SCDRA

Spring was in the air as the Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association (SCDRA) hosted its first member event of 2015 at the Sechelt Airport on Sunday, April 5.

The cool but sunny weather conditions were perfect for racing as 30-plus members enjoyed an Easter Sunday afternoon of drag racing with family and friends.

With the May race event just six weeks away, it was an opportunity to practise burnouts, launches and reaction times and determine which engine tweaks will be needed for the upcoming season. The more ambitious racers took full advantage of the practice time and were getting 20-plus passes.

The Elphinstone Drag Team had the 1981 Olds-mobile with a big 454 performing quite nicely. Teacher Alison Liddicoat, mentor Justin Henderson and students are gearing up for a great race season.

The SCDRA lady drag racers were out as Rebecca, Pamela, Tami, Alison and Sully continue to receive top marks and impress at each event.

Norm Robertson from Sechelt had his 460 powered 1979 F150 running incredibly well. He was consistently laying down the smokiest burnouts. Robertson and his truck were very entertaining and appreciated by everyone in attendance.

A good reaction time is a big component of successful drag racing. David Crombie and Rob Gurney were the best of the day with reaction times of .503.

Brian McLennan of Roberts Creek was fired up as he tested his beautiful 1964 Ford Blue Falcon. This was the first time the Falcon had been on a drag strip and McLennan was gently breaking in the impressive big block 502 with 700+hp.

The best ETs of the day went to McLennan running the 1/8 mile in a 6.640@106.88mph, Crombie pulling off a 7.219@101.26mph and with a 7.413@96.69mph was Al Crane driving his 1970 Camaro.

The SCDRA is hosting their next event on May 23 with a test ‘n’ tune, and races on May 24. Everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, contact Richard at 604-230-5067.
