Thirteen athletes from CrossFit Gibsons (also known as C3 or The Box) recently competed at the Canwest Games in Coquitlam. This is the largest functional fitness competition in Canada – and the third largest in North America – with over 1,200 athletes participating.

To qualify for the event, athletes had to achieve a high score on a series of challenging workouts. The competition is fierce, as people from across North America strive to qualify for a coveted spot at the Games.

C3 had members compete in the Elite Masters Women’s division (placing #6), the Intermediate Men’s division (placing #11), the Intermediate Trio division (placing #47), and the Scaled Trio division (placing #7, #18 and #35).

“The amount of competitive spirit, warrior heart and tremendous amount of fun that they delivered last weekend was humbling, touching and inspiring all at the same time,” said coach Milan Fraszczak. “We’re really proud of our competitors. Most of them have been training at CrossFit for just a couple of years. They didn’t join to become athletes – they wanted to improve their health and quality of life.”

If you live in Gibsons, you’ve probably witnessed CrossFit athletes as they train at The Box or run up and down School Road. There are currently about 150 members at C3, representing all ages, abilities, and body types. The magic is in the movements. Workouts are different every day and modified to help each athlete achieve his or her goals. CrossFit workouts can be adapted for people at any age and level of fitness.

“We have something special at C3,” said athlete Ashleigh Cater. “Our community and the dedication to the sport is really impressive and so inspiring!”
