The Sunshine Coast Rapids Bantam lacrosse team won 15 of 20 games this season to become division champions.

The team lost only two games this season and their goals against average record was by far the best out of all 39 Lower Mainland teams at their age level (13-14 years old). They also had the best penalty-killing record of all the teams. Given that our Sunshine Coast team has a much smaller bench than many of their mainland rivals, winning the division pennant is a huge achievement and stands as testament to the players’ outstanding motivation, commitment, and teamwork.

We would like to commend the players for their hard work this season. This win was truly a team effort, with every player contributing to the team’s success – even those who started playing lacrosse for the first time this season. These boys are total grinders who always gave their best effort at every game from start to finish and refused to give up, even when playing from behind against teams that had almost twice as many players on the bench. It has been amazing to watch the players – who live all over the Coast, from Madeira Park to Gibsons – come together as a team that can play to everyone’s strengths and always has each other’s backs.

Huge kudos and thanks to the team’s amazing coach, Bethia Macey, and assistant coaches Justin Macey and Ryan Fraser, who bring out the best in each player and inspire them to bring their A-game every time. Thanks also to our wonderful manager, Karen Nielsen, for overseeing all the gnarly scheduling and rescheduling tasks involved in running a successful season and making sure our team plays all its mainland games without too many late nights or double headers.

The Bantam Rapids’ next big challenge is qualifying for the Provincial Championships, which the team hopes to participate in July 18 to 21 in Victoria. If you’re on the Island during that time, please come support us. Lacrosse is a fast, exciting, and super fun game to watch. If you like hockey or basketball, you’re sure to love Canada’s official summer sport.

Go Rapids!
