Four Sunshine Coast kickboxers will be heading to Calgary at the end of March to compete in the 2019 World Kickboxing and Karate Union Nationals.

Ryan Daily, 42, will be competing as will Noah O’Sullivan, 19. Both are coached by David Hollet, 39, who also plans to compete. Hollett’s son, Cameron Nolan, will be fighting on his birthday on March 31. He’ll be 18. All athletes will fight in both continuous sparring and K1 divisions.

“We do local fights and local tournaments but nothing on this level,” said Hollett, founder of Hollett’s Kickboxing and MMA, adding that the fighters are still honing their style as they gear up for this major competition, the first in the club’s two-year history.

The competition takes place in Calgary and the athletes will be facing competitors who had to earn their way to the national championship through provincial tryouts – which no B.C. athletes were able to do because the organization doesn’t have anyone to oversee and organize provincial qualifiers.

“The people competing from B.C. will be doing their best to see if they can capture their spot on team Canada,” said Hollett. Those chosen will then have a chance to compete for Canada at the WKU World Championships in Bregenz, Austria in October.

Hollett is looking for sponsors to assist in funding the trip.
