For Glenn and Della Marshall, the Gibsons Yacht Club club boat program has been a window of opportunity: an opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and visit new places.

“It’s been a very positive experience,” says Glenn, who moved to Gibsons from Vancouver a couple of years ago.

“I’ve always wanted to sail, but never had an opportunity like this,” he adds. “And, it’s not expensive.”

The yacht club is holding an open house on July 27 for people interested in learning more about the club boat program, which has two sailboats, a 28-foot Grampian and a 26-foot Paceship. Both boats are maintained by club members who are experienced sailors.

“Experienced boaters are always willing to help and teach,” says Glenn. The program is part of the Gibsons Yacht Club. “But it’s not a learn-to-sail program. That’s a different one.”

Each member gets seven consecutive days’ use of the boats per year, and daily or overnight use when a boat is available. “There’s no limit on when you can go out,” Glenn adds, “except if the boat is booked by a member.”

Della really likes day sailing. “We’ve gone around Keats and explored places we never would have seen otherwise. It’s an experience, without being overwhelming.”

Glenn agrees. Recently they went on a 10-day trip to Desolation Sound with other club members. And Glenn went on GYC’s cruise to the Gulf Islands.

Club boat members join for a full year, which provides opportunities to crew in winter racing events in the harbour. If you join as of Aug. 1, membership lasts until August 2020 and costs $540. Club boat participants also need to join GYC as a boating member with annual dues of $175, prorated to $73 August 1.

“It’s a good deal,” says Hugh Willson, commodore of the Gibsons Yacht Club. “Our members have a blast at doing things that appeal to them. GYC has a close relationship with the Power Squadron, so there are courses and training available at reasonable prices.

“Fellowship is important,” he adds. “We also have an active social program.”

The GYC’s club boat Open House is at the Gibsons Marina July 27, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food will be available. The club’s website is www.gibsonsyachtclub.com
