Elphi senior boys host Cougar Camp

High school basketball

The Elphinstone Secondary School senior boys basketball team held its second annual Cougar Camp last Monday, Jan. 19.

The camp, held during School District No. 46’s professional development day, was a chance for the senior boys team to give back to the future of basketball in the district.

According to head coach Mike Sopow, 42 elementary school students came to the camp in the morning with the senior boys running them though drills. Then Elphi alum and current Douglas College Royals player Andrew Baron had 15 high school players in the afternoon.

In the elementary camp Euan, Mary Wood, Gavin Lynagh, Mark Olsen and Brandon Bezaire won awards for winning one of the various dribbling and shooting competitions. Top Cougar Camp athlete went to May Yakasovich.

On the court, the senior boys are 0-3 in league play and 5-8 in exhibition play.

“The guys have been working hard and have been showing steady improvement throughout the year,” Sopow said. “We play strong defensively and run the offence well but have troubles finishing the play.”

Elphi recently hosted their annual Cougar Classic Tournament, finishing second after they lost to Sullivan Heights in the final.

Dykstar and Ralph Del Rosario won game star awards, and Adam Withington was voted to the first team all-star squad.

The Cougars were at the Steveston-London tournament the weekend of Jan. 16, finishing sixth overall, losing to Hugh Boyd in the fourth-place game.

Conner Dempster, Adam and Greydon O’Brien received all-star awards for their effort during games.

The Elphi juvenile boys continue to impress and are on a four-game winning streak to sit at 5-1 in North Shore League play.
