The 2019 Elphinstone Alumni Basketball Tournament reached new heights on Dec. 27-28 with six teams and over 70 athletes competing for the championship trophy.

Games kicked off on Friday afternoon and ran straight through until Saturday night. The crowd saw many back and forth affairs including the graduates of 2019 knocking off the former champions in a semi-final matchup. The win from the 2019s meant that for the first time in the six years the tournament has ran, a new team would be playing in the final.

Although the shorthanded 2019s put up a great fight in the final game, the oldest team in the tournament, team “Washed-up,” was able to take home first place for the fifth time.

While T.J. Turenne was crowned this year’s 3-point champion, it was Denis Turenne who received the weekend’s spotlight. Turenne was honoured before the finals for his dedication and support for Elphinstone basketball over the past 40 years.

The Elphinstone Alumni Basketball Tournament has seen even more growth in its sixth year. Organizers commended the referees and scorekeepers for doing an exceptional job. Players looking to join in on the action next year should follow the Elphinstone Alumni Basketball page on Facebook for updates. Stay tuned next year as organizers look to introduce new aspects to keep this fun community event running for years to come.
