Marcus Davies (wearing red gloves and headgear) defeated Cody Robertson at the Italian Cultural Centre in Vancouver Nov. 21.

The Sunshine Coast Boxing Club’s Marcus Davies won a razor-thin decision Nov. 21 in a bruising bout against the tough and skilled Cody Robertson at the Italian Cultural Centre in Vancouver.

The aggressive Davies was able to keep most of the fight at close quarters, putting Robertson, who fights out of Savard Boxing in Surrey, into a counter punching situation where he landed some cracking punches to Davies’ head.

Davies backed up Robertson enough with big punches to win the first two rounds.

Early in the third round Robertson hammered Davies’ stomach with a hellacious body shot that slowed down Davies the rest of the final round.

This is where Davies’ conditioning paid off as he was able to stay close to his respected opponent and get the win.

“It also helps that Marcus Davies has a lot of guts and is one tough SOB,” said SCBC founder Rick Shannon, who also gave credit to coach Tariq Abdulrahman for Davies’ performance.

The annual Night of Fights sells out its 800 tickets each year for the dinner and boxing event, raising funds for Vancouver’s East End Boys Club and other youth causes.

Notables in the audience this year from the music industry were Brian Adams manager Bruce Allen, music producer Bob Rock and Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora.

This was Davies’ 20th bout and he has won five of his last seven fights against elite competition with the losses coming at the hands of an Alberta boxer in July and the current Canadian champion at the Canadian Championships in April.

The Sunshine Coast Boxing Club trains at the Lift Strength and Conditioning Centre in Wilson Creek.
