Big fights coming up for Coast fighters

Despite coming off a loss, Sechelt's Jordan Manning continues to train hard and focus on his next fight in February that could propel him to a title shot.

Despite coming off a loss, Sechelt's Jordan Manning continues to train hard and focus on his next fight in February that could propel him to a title shot.

Manning, now with a record of 1-2, lost in the first round to Kirk Tse at the Battlefield 5 fight card on Jan. 15 at the River Rock Casino in Richmond.

Phoenix Rising fighter and coach Dustin Dickenson said Manning fought well on Jan. 15.

"It was a good fight standing up for most of the first round. They were trading punches and then things got to the ground and Jordan got caught in a choke and that was it," Dickenson said. "It was a tough fight though, and I thought Jordan improved on some things and put on a good fight."

Dickenson said Manning has been offered his next fight with Westcoast Promotions MMA and will fight Feb. 18 on the Seeing Red II card at the Red Robinson Theatre at the Boulevard Casino in Coquitlam against Jeremy Kennedy.

If Manning wins the fight with Kennedy, then it's likely he'll get a shot at the 145 weight class title in April.

Brit Sluis, also from Sechelt, has also been training hard under Dickenson's guidance and will enter the cage for the first time on Feb. 18 against Cheryl Chan, one of Vancouver's up and coming fight stars.

"It will be a challenge for Brit, but I feel she's a bit bigger and stronger and she'll have more power than Cheryl," Dickenson said. "It will be a gruelling fight. Cheryl is certainly a tough fighter."

If Sluis wins, then she'll get a shot at a title in April.

As for Dickenson, he hopes to also get back into the cage - this time fighting in April for Westcoast Promotions.

"Both Jordan and Brit have tough fights coming up, but they are excited to have such an opportunity in front of them. They have nothing to lose, but a whole lot they could gain by taking these fights."
