Gibsons pistol shooter Allan Harding earned Team Canada a quota spot at the Pan Am Games thanks to his performance at the 2018 Shooting Championships of the Americas in Guadalajara, Mexico, which ran from Nov. 1 to 11.

Harding shot a 563 in the men’s 10m Air Pistol event and in the mixed team event he shot 374 while his teammate, Lea Wachowich, shot 366. To top it off, the quota spot he won is the first for Team Canada for the 2019 Pan Am Games. “It was definitely a good feeling knowing that one more step for my Olympic journey is in place,” said Harding, who is gunning to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Harding, who shot at the Guadalajara range at the World Cup in March, said this competition was meaningful because he has family members there who were able to attend and cheer him on.

In preparation for the next phase of the journey, Harding has been working with his coach, Lisa Borgerson, with a focus on mental fitness, such as visualization. Harding also said he is working through some technical issues with his equipment. “Going forward, I need to have total trust in my equipment,” he said.

Between now and December Harding will be taking some time off while addressing the issues with his gear and looking ahead at the 2019 World Cup Series schedule. “I know the road and journey is still long. It’s exciting and rewarding and I am planning to give it everything I can to make this happen and represent Canada at the Olympics,” Harding said.
