Thirty people sped along Redrooffs Road last Sunday for the eighth annual Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department’s 10K Run Until It Burns Fun Run, despite a downpour and the competing attractions of the Sunshine Coast Art Crawl and Halfmoon Bay Apple Festival.

“It was great – we only had one pre-registered person not show up because of the weather,” said race director and fire department volunteer Erin Wilson. “It was a pretty wet run.”

Competitors began at Fire Hall No. 2 and wound their way through the Welcome Woods neighbourhood before heading north up Redrooffs Road to finish at Fire Hall No. 1. “It’s a really hilly course. Definitely not the easiest 10k on the Sunshine Coast,” Wilson said.

This year’s first-place finisher was 58-year-old Roberts Creeker Gord Doerksen, with a time of 42:03. Halfmoon Bay resident Nadine Robinson, 43, was the top female finisher with a time of 46:36.

The youngest athlete to finish the 10-kilometre race was nine-year-old Dayton Tattrie of Sechelt, who finished in 1:16:21 – several places ahead of Town of Gibsons CAO Emanuel Machado, who earned the title of last place finisher with his time of 1:51:51.

One firefighter, Benjamin Borowski, competed with his mother, Janet Christoff, who was visiting from Kentucky. They crossed the finish line together with a time of 58:36.

Pacesetter Athletics helped organize the race and provided prizes.

Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Firefighters Association members, friends and family assisted with organizing the race and overseeing amenities. This year, proceeds from the race will go to the Elphinstone and Chatelech running teams.

“We’re happy to be involved in the Halfmoon Bay community and love the response we get every year, especially on a busy weekend,” Wilson said.
