Reflectors won’t last

Letters

Editor:

I much appreciate the recent addition of centre-line reflectors on the Highway 101 section from Gibsons to Roberts Creek. It adds a distinct gain of safety for nighttime driving, especially during heavy rain.

However, when I lived in Gold River, on Vancouver Island, about 25 years ago, they installed similar reflectors on the highway from Campbell River to Gold River. During the first snowfall, almost all of the reflectors were scraped to the side of the road by snowplows. They were then replaced by reflectors on the centre line that were recessed into the asphalt. Problem solved, as they were designed and installed so that the snowplow blade passed over them without damage or removal.

After a significant snowfall on the Sunshine Coast demanding snowplows on Highway 101, I would expect a similar experience, with the reflectors being scraped to the roadside.

After 25 years of experience on Vancouver Island, I would think that the highways department would have learned from that experience.
