Listen to public on Trellis

Letters

Editor:

This letter was sent to Sechelt’s mayor and council.

I am writing regarding council’s continued support of the Trellis Project. There is definitely a need for more long-term care beds on the Sunshine Coast but I do not agree with the private care option.

I support a public facility, basing my decision on:

• Personal experience: both my dad and uncle lived their final years in public long-term care facilities. The atmosphere was positive, the care wonderful and the staff happy.

• B.C. Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie’s recent report, A Billion Reasons to Care, on the problems with private care facilities.

I myself would choose a public rather than private care facility if or when the time comes.

Please listen to what the public wants. Vulnerable seniors are entitled to the best care possible. Private facilities are for profit with the bottom line a priority, often at the expense of residents.
