In it for the greater good

Letters

Editor:

If you’re in it for the greater good, you’re welcome at the Sechelt Legion.

The Sechelt Legion has been open since July 2. Pre-COVID-19, the capacity of our lounge was 185 patrons, and our patio capacity was 44 patrons. Fifty per cent capacity would have been 92 and 22 patrons respectively, but we erred on the side of caution, ensuring more than six feet between chair backs. This, simply because the Legion is in it for the greater good. In the end, we have 56 seats in the lounge and an additional 16 seats on the patio. We will not sacrifice the health of our staff, patrons, or community for the sake of making a dollar.

The Sechelt Legion understands our social and moral responsibility. We have complied with or exceeded the requirements of every B.C. health authority directive, because we understand we have a responsibility to our staff, our patrons, and indeed the greater community we serve. I find it disappointing and perplexing that there are establishments in Sechelt and elsewhere on the lower Coast that are not abiding by the fifty per cent or less capacity, nor the minimum six feet distance between chairs or tables.

If you are equally concerned and perhaps have not ventured out because you are concerned with the lack of standards, I urge you to visit us. You will find the lounge and patio bright and airy, with plenty of space for your comfort and safety.

Bill McLean, President, Sechelt Legion
