Haphazard mess

Letters

Editor:

On Saturday, Feb. 4, the sidewalks in downtown Sechelt were a treacherous mess. What snow clearing had taken place was done by some of the business owners, but not all. Add to this the matter of some retail spaces being vacant, plus some business owners refusing to comply with their snow removal responsibilities and you end up with what we had ā€“ a haphazard mess.

Does the District of Sechelt have any responsibility for keeping the sidewalks clear of snow in the downtown core? If not, why not? Whoever is responsible for this matter ā€“ on the wild assumption anyone is ā€“ Iā€™m sure they would have been deeply embarrassed to see how this situation played out for the elderly.

I continue to believe that we can and should do better.

If this matter is reviewed by council and District of Sechelt crews get involved in snow removal in the downtown core, that should not relieve business owners from their part in the overall objective of clearing sidewalks for those who utilize the downtown core as pedestrians.
