Gibsons losing character

Re: “Gibsons councillors struggle with defining seaside character,” Oct. 26.

I would like to voice my concern regarding one of the last decisions of the outgoing Gibsons mayor and council to approve the “form and character” for two development permits – specifically the apartment project on South Fletcher. Lower Gibsons has already lost too many character homes. Why is it OK to approve the proposed design for the new apartment building just because it is “similar to a single-family home” built across the street? Neither building fits with the traditional character of the neighbourhood. Why is it so difficult for our elected officials to develop and apply a set of “seaside” architectural styles and design principles/criteria that reflects the unique location and characteristics of this community? I hope that mayor-elect Bill Beamish and his new council will show the leadership required to grapple with the issue of maintaining a seaside character in our unique community.

And kudos to Coun. Stafford Lumley for voting against the permit for the South Fletcher building design.
