Gas prices don’t add up

Letters

Editor:

Piggybacking on the letter by F. Tucker about our gas prices being the highest he came across while on a trip to eastern B.C. (“We’re number one,” Sept. 28), I posted a similar rant on the Sunshine Coast Facebook page in the spring. At that time I had gone through New Westminster and the price of gas was $141.9 while it was $149.9 here.

The Lower Mainland has a built-in 17 cents per litre transit tax levy added to their gas prices, so why are our stations charging so much when they don’t have this levy? Even with the added costs of transporting gas to the Coast, our prices should still be lower than the Lower Mainland. When I moved here nearly four years ago the prices were always about seven cents cheaper, so what changed?

With the influx of visitors to the Coast through the summer, I’m sure the local stations made a killing, but why do they need to continue sticking it to us now that they’re gone? Why aren’t our local political representatives taking them to task? I encourage people to contact Pamela Goldsmith-Jones (Liberal MP), Nicholas Simons (NDP MLA), and your local government representatives to voice your concerns.
