The season for giving

Editorial

Tis the season to give and share — to help out those in need and ensure that everyone in our community has a happy holiday.

The season of giving has already started and it warmed our hearts to see the mountain of toys and stuffed animals that were brought to the Blackfish Pub this past Tuesday for their annual Toy Lunch. There are sure to be a lot more happy youngsters come Christmas morning, thanks to the generosity of so many.

And this weekend is a big one for many organizations on the Coast — especially the Sunshine Coast Elves Club.

From 2 to 8 p.m. at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse, Sunshine Coast entertainers will be on stage giving their all, while Elves work the phones and wait for your calls and your donations. This is the largest fundraiser for the Elves Club and it goes a huge way to ensuring that the Club has enough funds to purchase food and toys for Christmas hampers, which are given to those in need.

We’re sure that the hearty bunch from the Gibsons volunteer fire department will be out too along Gibsons Way — boots in hand — also drumming up donations for the Elves Club. In years past they have even had a firefighter take to the skies in their ladder truck to bring attention to the cause. While you are out doing your Christmas shopping, make sure you lend a helping hand.

And down in Gibsons Landing the good folks at Zocalo and The Landing Clothing Company are holding their Fill the Vans food drive for St. Bart’s Church. Bring them a donation and help fill the vans for the church’s food bank.

Early next week, Dec. 9, the Leadership students from Elphinstone Secondary School will be going door to door in their annual blitz picking up food donations for the area food bank. This is always a great event that the community supports. Kudos to these students for certainly showing leadership in our community.

And we can’t forget the Salvation Army and their Kettle Campaign.

The sounds of bells can be heard in Gibsons, Wilson Creek and Sechelt. If you have some time — two hours from now until Dec. 24 — to take a shift, the Salvation Army would be in your debt.

They are hoping to raise $57,000 this year — a tall task — but one that is achievable if we all pitch in and lend a hand.

We live in a great and supportive community. We give when we can and we open up our hearts — and wallets — to ensure that those in need are supported. We know this Christmas season we all will do our part.
