Chief Warren Paull and three members of the sitting council have been nominated to run for re-election in the shíshálh Nation’s upcoming elections.

The official candidate list was released Dec. 11, following a nomination meeting on Dec. 9.

As well as Paull, three others are running for chief: Nievelina Carmona, Randy Joe and Lenora Joe.

Councillors Alvina Paul, Selina August and Corey August are all running for re-election in a field that also includes Jessie August, Barbara Joe and Clarence Joe.

There were 313 votes cast in the 2017 election, a turnout Paull said at the time was the highest ever, but it could be higher this time out because of recent amendments to the shíshálh Nation constitution. The changes expanded eligibility to run for office and vote by removing the restriction on having to live in shíshálh territory.

For this election, all shíshálh Nation members who will be 18 years of age or older on or before Feb. 15, 2020 are eligible, regardless of where they live as long as they’re on the voters’ list, which will be finalized in early February.

When the amendments were adopted, Paull told Coast Reporter that most of the shíshálh Nation’s non-resident members live in the Vancouver area.

The nation has scheduled an all candidates meeting for members on Dec. 16.

The advance poll will be held on Feb. 9 and the election will be Feb. 15.
