Travel training available

The Community Resource Centre's Progress Plan, for women's economic well-being along the Sunshine Coast, is teaming up with Better at Home, Welcoming Communities and Sunshine Coast Transit to offer free community travel training for the public.

"There is a need for more frequent and available bus service and there are also other barriers to public transit usage," said Progress Plan project manager Michelle Morton. "Examples include a lack of knowledge about how to use the bus system, safety concerns and accessibility challenges that hinder some women from using public transit."

Raising awareness about existing services and providing skills training may help residents make better use of public transit on the Coast. Parents with small children, newcomers to the Coast, older adults and people with disabilities may be more willing and able to use the bus or HandyDART services as part of their daily routines with some additional information and training.

There are two upcoming travel training program sessions at a pair of community events, which are open to all. These two upcoming public sessions are designed to encourage local people to ask questions, conquer their fears and get hands-on practice manoeuvring strollers, bikes, wheelchairs or other mobility devices on and off the bus.

The first session is on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Sechelt Night Market on Cowrie Street and the second session will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. as part of the Synchronicity Festival at Shirley Macey Park.
