Environment Canada says the Sechelt weather station was among more than 30 across the province that have recorded record high temperatures this week.

Records were set Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Sechelt reached a high of 16.2 degrees on March 17. The previous record was 13.2 in 2005.

The high March 18 hit 18 degrees, beating the previous record of 14 degrees set in 1981.

And on the 19th the high was 18.3 C. The old record was 14 degrees set in 1984.

Temperatures were slightly cooler at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, according to the data from the weather stations in Gibsons and Port Mellon.

The normal high for this time of year on the Sunshine Coast is 11 C.

Forecasters are calling for sun and warmer than average temperatures through Thursday, and Avalanche Canada has issued a warning for people heading into the mountains during spring break. The warning includes the Sunshine Coast and Sea to Sky backcountry areas.

“This is the first big warming to hit our snowpack,” the group said in a statement Monday. “Any time the snowpack is hit with a big change, it tends to destabilize. The temperatures are forecast to increase substantially this week, with no nighttime cooling. This will weaken the snowpack on all aspects, increasing the possibility of large natural avalanches as well making it easier for the weight of a person to trigger deeper weak layers.”
