The District of Sechelt has selected Waste Management to provide curbside solid waste collection, including recycling and organics.

The details of the new contract are still being finalized, but it will include extending the kitchen scrap and yard waste pickup that’s been running as a pilot project in Davis Bay to cover the entire district.

Other changes include offering all solid waste services to multi-family residences and providing new “critter proof” bins and new recycling bins.

A release announcing the new contract also said the district will be signing an agreement with Recycle BC in the spring.

“Recycle BC provides municipalities with a collection incentive and pay all the recycling processing costs. The cost savings realized from joining Recycle BC will offset the majority of the costs associated with expanding the organics, recycling and processing solid waste services,” the release said.

Last year the fee per household was $216 and the 2019 draft budget calls for no change, although it anticipates the cost of delivering solid waste services will rise from $942,000 to $958,240.

“We are very excited to be able to expand our solid waste services to divert more recyclables and compostables from the landfill,” said Paul Appelt, an engineering technician with the district.
