The District of Sechelt has released test results on the non-potable water it’s making available for people now that Stage 2 watering restrictions are in place.

During previous droughts the district has made groundwater from its Ebbtide Street property available for residents, but only at Stage 4. District crews also use the water for baskets and planters.

Council passed a motion earlier this month to let the public fill up containers at Ebbtide as soon as Stage 2 was declared on June 7.

The motion also specified that “signage be posted at the water station indicating the source of the water, the non-potable nature of the water, and recommended uses for the water to avoid direct human contact.”

The wording led to some confusion about what the water could be safely used for.

According to the district, the water source has been tested by a company called Caro Analytical Services which found the water is “safe to use on vegetables, trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses.”

The water is, however, “not disinfected therefore is not potable and not for human consumption.”

The district is also advising people that, “in all situations, edibles grown in a garden should be washed before eating.”
