The Sunshine Coast has several landscape units, which are areas of land used for long-term resource management activity planning, usually between 50,000 and 100,000 hectares in size.

Efforts to initiate a land-use planning process for Mt. Elphinstone are underway, following a meeting between Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) staff and staff from the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development (FLNORD).

Janette Loveys, SCRD chief administrative officer, announced at an Oct. 11 planning meeting that provincial and SCRD staff met on Oct. 2 after SCRD contacted the ministry about engagement on land-use planning following a presentation by Dan Bouman of the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association on Sept. 27. Bouman spoke about options for areas of protection on the mountain.

At the Oct. 11 meeting, Loveys said talks with the ministry are preliminary. “We don’t have a lot to report from our meeting, other than that we are seeking support to continue to work with provincial staff on this initiative as they continue to evolve whatever this process would look like for Mount Elphinstone,” she said.
