Pender water main replacement costs rise

The cost of a contract to replace water mains in North and South Pender Harbour water systems has increased to approximately $3 million. The project was initially expected to cost slightly more than $2.5 million.

Construction began last October and since then about 90 per cent of the piping has been installed but significantly more rock blasting was needed than anticipated, which required more paving than expected, resulting in increased project costs.

At a planning meeting on March 14, Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) directors voted to increase the project budget, which includes a “contingency allowance” in case other unanticipated costs are incurred.

Public hearing planned for Halfmoon Bay subdivision

A public hearing is expected to be arranged following a Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) planning committee’s decision to approve recommendations for second reading on zoning bylaw amendments for a proposed subdivision in Halfmoon Bay.

The 10-lot subdivision would be located on a 4.2-hectare property on Redrooffs Road west of Kenyon Creek near Sargeant Bay that is surrounded by rural residential properties, with the ocean to the south.

An amendment to the zoning bylaw would be needed since the lot sizes are slightly smaller than what’s allowable under current zoning, but the difference in the number of lots is so small that the proposed density would still comply with Halfmoon Bay’s official community plan.
