RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for April 29 to May 6:

Break and Enter

• Sometime between late April and May 3, a suspect broke a locked gate to gain access to a property in the 5400 block of Garden Bay Road and stole a number of items including a Generac 4000 7.8 horsepower generator, an orange Husqvarna YTH220K42 riding mower, a Briggs & Stratton gas push mower and a barbecue. Anyone with any information about this break and enter and theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-2599.

• Late on May 3, while making foot patrols related to another matter, police heard noises at a residence in the 13500 block of Barabash Road, Garden Bay, that was believed to be abandoned. Police investigated and located two male suspects inside with a pile of copper piping and various tools commonly used during break and enters. The suspects were arrested and released on undertakings and promises to appear at court on charges of break and enter. The file is still under investigation.

Fire

• On May 2, police assisted the Gibsons Volunteer Fire Department with a fully engulfed structure fire in the 1100 block of Chaster Road, Gibsons. The derelict building was unoccupied and no injuries were reported by occupants of a nearby structure who share the property. The fire was determined to be human-caused and not suspicious but the incident is still under investigation.

Theft

• Sometime between April 29 and 30, a suspect stole a 10-foot-long fibreglass rowboat from a property in the 2000 block of Cassidy Road, Roberts Creek, as well as a pair of oars that had been stored in an outbuilding. The boat has two copper rollers on the back for pulling up crab traps. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-2530.

• Overnight on April 30, a suspect stole a walker from a storage area at a residence in the 5600 block of Wharf Avenue, Sechelt. The two-handled walker is described as burgundy and black with a dark blue seat. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-2503.

• On May 3, staff at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way witnessed a female suspect stealing a number of items before leaving the premises. Staff followed the suspect out and were able to recover the stolen goods before the suspect fled in a vehicle. Police located the vehicle and suspect a short time later and arrested the suspect for theft under $5,000. She was released on a promise to appear for court and an undertaking with conditions. The file is still under investigation.

• On May 3, police attended a theft from a business in the 1100 block of Highway 101, Gibsons, after staff witnessed the female suspect take an item and then leave without paying for it. The suspect, who was seen stealing from the same business a week earlier, left in a vehicle and staff were able to note the licence plate. The file is still under investigation.

‘Grandchild’ Scam / Fraud

• On May 1, a Sunshine Coast resident received a call from someone purporting to be her grandson and saying that he was in trouble. The caller told the resident he needed a large amount of money to bail him out of jail, and to please not tell his mother. The resident initially requested some time to gather the money but then grew suspicious and contacted police. Police confirmed this was a common scam and advised the resident to discontinue any further contact with this particular “grandson.”

• On May 1, a Coast resident reported a fraud after responding to an ad on a popular online classifieds site. The resident responded to an ad for four sought-after concert tickets and agreed to e-transfer the seller the payment. The resident received the four tickets which appeared legitimate but then a week later, noticed the same tickets for sale by the seller again. The resident pretended to be another buyer and confirmed the seller was trying to sell the exact same tickets she’d already paid for and received. It is unlikely the resident will be able to recover her money nor that her tickets will turn out to be authentic. • On May 3, police witnessed a vehicle southbound on Highway 101 near Derby Road, Sechelt, travelling at a very high rate of speed. Radar confirmed the vehicle was travelling more than double the posted speed limit. Police initiated a traffic stop and issued the driver a violation ticket for excessive speed as well as a seven-day vehicle impound notice. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.
