Kim Whitford, owner of Ricky’s All Day Grill, puts the finishing touches on the Christmas meal she and her staff prepared for those in need on Dec. 11. The restaurant provided 35 free meals.

It took about four turkeys and the rest of the usual Christmas fixings to feed 35 people at Ricky’s All Day Grill in Sechelt. It may not have been a home-cooked meal, but it was on the house.

“They’ve got a pretty good spread, it’s going to be good,” said Kim Whitford, owner of Ricky’s, a few hours prior to the guests’ arrival at the restaurant on Dec. 11.

Whitford and her staff prepared the supper for those who use the shelter in Sechelt or who are in need of a hot meal. The shelter distributed tickets to ensure an accurate headcount, but other than that, Whitford refrained from publicizing the event.

She also bought and wrapped presents, which she said were “nothing extravagant – some candy, hair brush, stuff like that.”

The restaurant’s food supplier provided some support and according to Whitford, “Ricky’s helps out a little bit,” but otherwise it was her team and herself who managed the meal. “We try to do as much on our own as possible,” she said. “The staff has made desserts and cakes and buns and they’re volunteering their time to do it.”

The idea came after Whitford prepared a turkey soup on Thanksgiving for the shelter in Sechelt. After speaking with staff, and suggesting she prepare a meal for Christmas time, the shelter staff approved the idea and the date was set.

While Ricky’s has prepared breakfast at Kinnikinnick Elementary School for the Sunshine Coast school district’s breakfast program, this was the first time Whitford has prepared a Christmas meal. “I like seeing people happy. This is the worst time of year for some people,” said Whitford. “If I can give them just a little bit, I will.”
