Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for June 2 to 9:
Traffic Incidents
• On June 7, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Trail Avenue near Neptune Road, Sechelt, after a northbound vehicle lost control, went off the road and collided with a power pole, shearing it off as a result. Multiple witnesses saw the vehicle travelling at high speed prior to the collision. The driver was seen exiting the vehicle on his own. The driver, who was uninjured and exhibiting signs of possible impairment by alcohol, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. He was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.
• On June 4, a single-vehicle incident involving a building in the 5500 block of Inlet Avenue, Sechelt, was reported after the driver accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake and drove into the side of the unoccupied building. As no injuries were reported, the vehicle was still drivable, and damage to the building was confined to the exterior wall, the matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On June 5, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 13200 block of Highway 101, Garden Bay, after a northbound vehicle went off the road and rolled over. Both the driver and passenger were taken to Sechelt Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and the vehicle was towed from the scene. The driver advised that he'd swerved to avoid a pedestrian who did not remain at the scene. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On June 8, police attended a three-vehicle incident at the intersection of Highway 101 and Roberts Creek Road, Roberts Creek. The first vehicle driver attempted to make a left turn off the highway and did not see the second oncoming westbound vehicle. The second vehicle driver was unable to brake in time to avoid a collision and struck the first vehicle, causing it to spin and collide into the third vehicle. Fortunately, none of the drivers or passengers reported any life-threatening injuries, but the first two vehicles were damaged and needed to be towed from the scene. The first vehicle driver, who advised she had not seen the other vehicle coming straight through the intersection, was issued a violation ticket for an improper turn at an intersection. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
Thefts
• Between June 8 and 9, a suspect stole two prawn traps that had been set up off Thormanby Island. The two traps had large floats attached that were marked with the name “UPTON” as well as a phone number. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference number 2019-3589.
• Overnight on June 2, a suspect gained entry to an unlocked vehicle parked in the 900 block of Celestial Place, Gibsons, and stole a navy blue Coal Harbour brand Sunshine Coast Regional District employee jacket and a Bluetooth speaker. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-3431.
• On June 6, a theft was reported at a business in the 800 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after the male suspect took some items and left without paying. The theft was captured on security video, as well as audio of the suspect uttering racial slurs. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male in his mid-50s, of average build and height, wearing a dark jacket, backpack, red hat, and carrying a cane or walking stick. Police are attempting to identify the suspect.
Found Property
• On June 6, a bike that had been found at the Langdale BC Ferries terminal was turned in. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference police file 2019-3464.
Mischief
• On June 8, police attended a mischief complaint in the 8200 block of Redrooffs Road, Halfmoon Bay, after a resident noticed fire damage to a newspaper box. The suspect appears to have lit the newspapers but fortunately, the fire was put out before further damage other than to the inside of the box and several copies of the newspaper could occur. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-3522.
Fraud
• On June 8, a Coast resident reported she had fallen victim to a popular scam after she responded to calls from people purporting to be from Microsoft. After much back and forth, the resident received a large cheque from “Microsoft” that was supposedly a refund for “fees” she paid earlier. But then the resident was told that the cheque amount was incorrect and that she needed to repay the excess amount. The resident agreed to pay back the monies and allowed the scammer access to her computer, which led to three withdrawals from her bank account, totalling in the thousands, with the funds going to an international account. The resident has been directed to discuss the matter with her bank. Shots Fired
• On June 10, police received several complaints of sounds of shots fired in the area north of the 2200 block of Field Road, Wilson Creek. Police determined that the shots were originating in the wooded area north of the Sechelt Airport by a forest service road. Three males from the Lower Mainland were located and they advised that they had been shooting off legal firearms into a dirt mound that they believed was well past the airport property, with no immediate risk to the public. The males, who all had the proper licences, were determined to have been operating their firearms in a proper manner, just in an improper location. The males were advised to take extra care in future to find appropriate locations to discharge firearms.
