Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Oct. 29 to Nov. 5: Vehicle Fire • At around 3 p.m. on Nov. 1, police assisted the Gibsons Volunteer Fire Department with a fully engulfed empty vehicle fire in the 500 block of Gower Point Road, Gibsons.

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Oct. 29 to Nov. 5:

Vehicle Fire

• At around 3 p.m. on Nov. 1, police assisted the Gibsons Volunteer Fire Department with a fully engulfed empty vehicle fire in the 500 block of Gower Point Road, Gibsons. It is unknown what the cause of the fire was but the incident is being investigated as an arson. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-7652.

Scam

• On Oct. 30, a Sunshine Coast resident reported falling for a common scam after responding to an unsolicited email from a male requesting help to transfer a large sum of money out of a foreign country. The resident agreed to help fund the transaction and was promised a large payment in exchange, once the transaction was successful. The resident sent the scammer a large sum of money in bitcoin but then realized she’d been scammed. Collision

• On Nov. 4, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 11000 block of Highway 101, Madeira Park, after the BC Emergency Health Services  (EHS) reported a vehicle off road in a ditch. Police, BC EHS and the local volunteer fire department all assisted in extracting the driver from the vehicle, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, who was not impaired, reported fatigue and that she had dozed off while driving. A witness corroborated the driver’s account. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Impaired Driving

• On Nov. 4, a witness reported a possible impaired driver after the vehicle was seen swerving in and out of its lane southbound in the 1600 block of Highway 101, Roberts Creek. Police located the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. After noting the driver exhibiting signs of possible alcohol impairment, the driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Distracted Driving

• On Nov. 4, a witness reported a possible impaired driver swerving all over the road, crossing into the oncoming lane and back again, southbound in the 5700 block of Highway 101, Sechelt. Police located the suspect vehicle and spoke with the unimpaired driver. The driver advised that he kept looking backwards to check on his baby that was in the rear seat. It appears every time the driver looked backwards, he yanked the steering wheel to the side. The driver was warned about the potential consequences of distracted driving. 

Attempted Break and Enter

• At approximately 9:45 p.m. on Nov. 4, a suspect triggered an alarm at a business in the 5600 block of Teredo Street, Sechelt, after throwing a rock through a glass door, shattering it in the process. Police attended and found the front door unlocked but did not locate anyone inside and the business owner confirmed nothing was stolen. Police are reviewing surveillance video for a possible suspect. The file is still under investigation.

Mischief: Damaged Playing Field

• Sometime between Nov. 2 and 4, a suspect in a truck or SUV type vehicle lifted a gate chain to gain entry to a school playing field in the 5000 block of Gonzales Road, Madeira Park and ripped up the grass surface with its tires. Anyone with any information about this mischief is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-7761.

Attempted Theft from Vehicle

• At around 4 a.m. on Oct. 31, a suspect gained entry to vehicles parked at a residence in the 600 block of Leek Road, Roberts Creek. The residents were wakened by their dog barking and discovered that the doors to the vehicles were left open. The suspect rummaged through the interiors but did not steal anything.

Found Property

• On Oct. 31, a woman’s ring that had been found at a business in the 5500 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, was turned in. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Reference file 2018-7635.

• On Oct. 31, a man’s ring that had been found at a business in the 5500 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, was turned in. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Reference file 2018-7636.

• On Nov. 5, a distinctive small change purse that had been left on a BC Transit bus a few days earlier was turned in to RCMP. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Reference file 2018-7757. A second small purse containing Canadian as well as foreign currency was also turned in by BC Transit. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Reference file 2018-7762.
