RCMP: Hunting rifle stolen from vehicle in Gibsons

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for May 26 to June 4:

Theft

• Overnight on May 31, a thief gained entry to an unsecured vehicle parked in the 800 block of Celestial Place, Gibsons, and stole a hunting rifle and binoculars. The custom-made rifle is described as an 8x68 millimetre European calibre with wood stock and hand-forged barrel with a twist and included a Burris Sullfield 3-14 scope. The green binoculars were Voretex Crossfire brand 10x42 strength and were in a Voretex case. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-3352.

• Between May 26 and June 1, a thief has been stealing gas from a boat moored at a marina in the 4800 block of Pool Lane, Garden Bay. The suspect emptied one of two tanks the first time and then returned again days later and emptied out both tanks. No other theft or damage was reported. Anyone with any information about these incidents is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-3354.

• Overnight on June 1, a thief gained entry to an unlocked vehicle parked in the 900 block of North Road, Gibsons, and stole a wallet full of identification and assorted bank and credit cards. The owner found most of the wallet contents strewn about at the end of the driveway. Police remind the public to remove any valuables from their vehicles to deter any opportunistic thieves.

• Overnight on May 28, a thief stole four steel spreader bars from a work site in the 5700 block of Hightide Avenue, Sechelt. The steel bars are made by Prolock Shoring. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-3246.

• Sometime between October 2108 and May 2019, a thief stole two lounger chairs from a property in the 12000 block of Bryan Road, Madeira Park. The heavy greyish-beige plastic loungers have the brand name Garden-Life and Made in Spain on them, and are very sturdy and durable. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-3327.

Collision

• On May 28, police attended a two-vehicle incident involving a deer in the 9300 block of Highway 101, Halfmoon Bay. The first eastbound vehicle struck the deer when it ran out into the road, causing the vehicle to swerve left where it collided with the second vehicle. Both vehicles sustained moderate to significant damage and had to be towed from the scene. Fortunately, none of the drivers or passengers reported any injuries and the matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On June 1, police attended a two-vehicle incident in the 1800 block of Highway 101 after a northbound vehicle slowed to make a left turn off the highway and was struck from behind by a vehicle that was going at full speed. Fortunately, no life-threatening injuries were reported but both drivers were taken to Sechelt Hospital for treatment and both vehicles sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene. The second vehicle driver was issued a violation ticket for driving without due care. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On June 2, police attended a two-vehicle incident in the 900 block of North Road, Gibsons, after the first southbound vehicle stopped when traffic came to a standstill and was rear-ended by a second vehicle. Fortunately, the collision occurred at slow speed due to traffic volume, and no serious injuries were reported, but the first vehicle had to be towed due to damage. The second vehicle driver advised she’d been distracted by a sign when she struck the first vehicle. The second driver was issued a violation ticket for following too closely. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Impaired Driving

On June 3, police attended a two-vehicle incident in the 1200 block of Reed Road after a motorcyclist was seen swerving over the centre line before clipping the side mirror of an oncoming truck. The motorcycle and rider ended up in the ditch. Emergency Health Services and the Gibsons Volunteer Fire Department assisted and the possibly impaired rider was located walking down the road. The rider was taken to Sechelt Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries where he was also given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. After a Fail result, the rider was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his motorcycle will be impounded for 30 days. The matter was referred to RoadSafeBC.

Mischief

• Sometime between May 24 and 30, a suspect damaged an art installation in the 12800 block of Mainsail Road, Madeira Park. The multi-media piece included a grey foam beaver that was broken off from the main body of the piece. Anyone with any information about this mischief is asked contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-3353.

Found Property

• On June 2, a container with cash inside was found in Irvines Landing. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference police file number 2019-3384.

• On June 3, a woman’s ring that had been found at a business in the 5500 block of Highway 101 was turned in. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference police file 2019-3405.
