missing boat
The Lafarge tugboat Alison Nicole 1 returns a missing Boston whaler boat to its owners in Halfmoon Bay on Friday, Aug. 24, at about noon. The boat was recovered in the Sechelt area.

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Aug. 20 to 27:

Fraud

• On Aug. 27, after his credit card was stolen days earlier from his vehicle while parked at Coopers Green, Halfmoon Bay, a Coast resident reported that multiple fraudulent transactions had been made at several local businesses totalling thousands of dollars. Police are following up with the businesses and gathering surveillance video footage. The file is still under investigation.

Spider Causes Car Crash

• On Aug. 26, police attended a single vehicle incident on Highway 101 at Chelpi Road, Sechelt, and located the vehicle upside down on the side of the road. The sober driver, who was uninjured, reported that he’d been distracted by a large spider on his leg which caused him to drive off the road and flip over. The vehicle, which sustained significant damage, was towed from the scene and the matter has been referred to ICBC.

Impaired Driving Collision

• On Aug. 23, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 11600 block of Highway 101, Madeira Park, after the BC Ambulance Service located two males asleep inside a vehicle off road. The driver advised that he’d been travelling north when he failed to negotiate a curve, crossed over the centre line and drove over the embankment into the wooded area. Neither driver nor passenger sustained any injuries, but during their discussion, police noted possible signs of impairment so the driver was issued a roadside alcohol screening test. After a “warn” result, the driver was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded.

Collision with Cyclist

• On Aug. 23, police attended a vehicle versus cyclist incident in the 900 block of Venture Way, Gibsons, after a cyclist rode out from a parking lot into the passenger side of a southbound vehicle. The vehicle driver remained on scene and provided assistance to the cyclist while awaiting BC Ambulance Service to arrive. The driver reported that visibility to the parking lot entrance had been blocked by an improperly parked vehicle and that he didn’t see the cyclist until too late. A witness corroborated the driver’s account and the matter has been referred to ICBC.

Impaired Driving

• Early on Aug. 26, witnesses reported a possible impaired driver at the Langdale BC Ferries terminal. Police attended and spoke with the suspect who was displaying clear signs of intoxication. The driver was given a roadside alcohol screening test and after a fail result, was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The driver was allowed to carry on her journey as a foot passenger.

Serious Collision Avoided

• On the morning of Aug. 26, a dangerous driver was reported on Highway 101 near Wharf Avenue, Sechelt, after the westbound driver made a left turn, crossing over two eastbound lanes without signalling, right in front of a BC Transit bus, in order to get to the Petro Canada gas station. This action forced the bus driver to hit his brakes hard to avoid a collision, disrupting several passengers in the process. After speaking to a witness who corroborated the bus driver’s account, police located the westbound driver, who admitted he’d misjudged the speed of the oncoming bus. The driver was issued a violation ticket for driving without consideration. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
