Sunshine Coast RCMP are investigating after a body was found inside the Pacific Challenge, a ship moored in Whiskey Slough.

A fire broke out aboard the vessel around 7:30 Wednesday morning.

Const. Karen Whitby said when first responders boarded the ship after putting out the blaze they found the dead person, who has yet to be identified.

The person was living on board and fire could have been the result of unsafe wiring on a heater, Whitby said, and there was no indication the fire was suspicious.

Frank Mauro, Sunshine Coast Regional District director for the area and chair of the Harbour Authority, said the fire posed no danger to government wharves or harbour operations.
