Sunshine Coast RCMP say the human remains found on a Roberts Creek beach in July have been identified.

In a release issued Sept. 21, RCMP said DNA analysis by the BC Coroners Service confirmed the remains were those of a Delta man reported missing in 2016.

Police did not offer any other details.

The discovery of the remains July 11 by two teens walking a dog on the beach below the 800 block of Bayview Road got a large amount of media attention because it happened a day after a social media post from author and artist Douglas Coupland showing what appeared to be part of a human leg on a beach and tagged “Roberts Creek.”

Police quickly determined it was an unfortunate coincidence after contacting Coupland at his home in the Lower Mainland and confirming that the photo was of a prop Coupland had used for an earlier project.
