Teenagers will be touring neighbourhoods in Langdale, Gibsons and Roberts Creek to collect food for those in need ahead of the holidays.

Elphinstone Secondary students will be dropping donation bags at homes on and around Dec. 1. Residents can add items to the bags, and can leave them outside their doors on Dec. 8, when students will be making the rounds to pick them up between 3:15 and 7 p.m.

Food and other collected items will be donated to the Salvation Army and St. Bartholomew’s food banks in Gibsons.

Diapers, wet wipes, menstrual products, cash and cheque donations will be accepted in addition to non-perishable food.

Students will be taking COVID-19 precautions: food will be quarantined for a week, and students collecting goods will maintain a two-metre distance from community members.

The Elphinstone Secondary School class organizes a holiday food drive annually. Last year, the event brought in approximately 2,000 items, according to Grade 12 student Piper Goerzen. “It’s usually a pretty successful event.”

Those who wish to donate directly can drop off items at the high school on Dec. 8 between 5 and 7:30 p.m.

Questions can be directed to the school at 604-886-2204 or sent via email to smani@sd46.bc.ca.
