A roof replacement for Frank West Hall and Cliff Mahlman Fire Hall in Elphinstone could be completed by the end of summer.
Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) directors voted in favour of entering into a $185,000 contract with Nelson Roofing and sheet Metal Ltd. at the March 14 planning meeting.
Elphinstone director Donna McMahon asked about when construction was slated to begin and about the lifespan of the roof. Staff were unable to provide specific answers but did say that lifespan and durability were considerations. The new roof will consist of 24-guage standing seam metal panels and has been professionally engineered.
In 2016, when the project was assessed, it was anticipated to cost $150,000 but rising construction costs and another assessment led to the increase. The extra amount will be paid for equally through Community Parks reserves and Gibsons and District Volunteer Fire Department reserves.
The staff report also indicated there could be a chance the price could increase again if during construction it becomes apparent that structural or fascia components need to be replaced.
Voting was open to rural directors only, which Gibsons director Bill Beamish contested given the roof will be partially paid for through the Gibsons fire department reserves.
