Sunday’s clear, cold and windy weather in Howe Sound made for perfect conditions for sailboat racing and, it turned out, a bit of whale watching.

After some of the crews that had been out racing returned to dock and were tidying up their boats, a young grey whale made its way inside the Gibsons breakwater and started swimming around the Gibsons Marina.

It passed within three metres of the stern of the Alatus, giving the crew a perfect view.

One of them, Jessica Davies, shot some video of the whale, which Kim Davies, who had also been out on the Alatus, called an “added highlight to a gorgeous day of racing.”
