Gibsons council’s new youth representatives were sworn in at the opening of the Feb. 19 regular meeting.

Elphinstone Secondary students Sacha Stipec and Jason Lewis, who were chosen from among five applicants, took the same oath of office as the elected councillors, right down to pledging not to participate in debates on issues where they had a “pecuniary interest.”

Mayor Bill Beamish said while youth councillors are a new idea in Gibsons, he’s seen it work well in other jurisdictions.

Stipec, who will be the lead representative, spoke for both of them during the councillor report segment of meeting.

“Jason and I just wanted the opportunity to say that we’re really excited about this position,” she said. “We’ve already talked about how we can go round to the clubs in our school and how we can really get the voice of youth on the Sunshine Coast heard, and we’re really excited to start.”
