Gibsons council has approved the terms of reference for two new committees.

The police services select committee will include Coun. Stafford Lumley as chair, as well as two former RCMP detachment commanders, Ed Hill and Brad Zalys, and lawyer Derek Stanfied.

The committee will be expected to study the current level of police services in Gibsons and suggest ideas for improvements as well as look into the cost and organizational implications of crossing the 5,000 population threshold, which will make the Town responsible for its own policing.

The latest BC Stats estimate put the population of Gibsons at 4,943.

The committee is expected to deliver a report by November.

The other committee, a planning and development committee, will take on the role of the advisory planning commission. It will deal with all planning issues, such as zoning and official community plans.

All members of council will sit on the committee, which Coun. Aleria Ladwig will chair. The committee will also include two members from the public at large.
