Councillors in Gibsons have voted to defer this year’s tax sale, the auction used to recover money owed by property owners who haven’t kept up with their property taxes.

In a written report for council, director of finance Lorraine Coughlin said at this point 2020 is a typical year, with 18 properties with a combined $78,527 in delinquent taxes and interest owing on the preliminary list for the tax sale.

“Although the number of properties this year is on par with previous years and collection efforts have been successful in the past, the challenging circumstances created by the pandemic may make it difficult for owners to make the minimum payment and avoid the tax sale,” Coughlin said.

Coughlin said the finance department will continue to make efforts to collect delinquent taxes.

Council voted to defer the sale to Sept. 27, 2021.

“It’s important that we give everybody every consideration this year that we can,” said Mayor Bill Beamish.

The Town hasn’t had to send a property to the sale since 2017, when the owners of one property out of 17 on the preliminary list didn’t make the minimum payment.
