Residents of Gibsons will be seeing some new trucks on garbage day starting in April.

Councillors voted Tuesday night to approve a new five-year contract with Sechelt-based Salish Soils and AJM Disposal Services, a Lower Mainland company, for collection of both solid waste and organics.

The combined Salish Soils/AJM bid came in at about $180,000 less for garbage collection and about $100,000 less for organics than the bid from existing contractor Waste Management Canada.

A report from director of finance David Douglas said the Salish Soils proposal offered weekly collection and disposal of residential organics, bi-weekly collection and disposal of residential garbage and weekly collection and disposal of garbage from 14 strata complexes. The total cost for garbage collection over the five-year contract will be $602,035; total for the organics program will be $1,157,095.

He also said the Town will continue to allow residents an opportunity to opt out of the organics pickup, and that the new contract will not affect the rate the Town is currently charging residents.

Late last year Salish Soils was also awarded the contract to dispose of biosolids from the Town’s wastewater treatment plant.
