The Elves Club had a record fundraising weekend, raising $27,679 from Saturday’s Crash the Coast telethon and boot drive. That’s a new record, according to telethon producer Brittany Broderson, who said last year’s Crash the Coast event brought in just under $22,000. The money goes towards gift cards that supply those in need with groceries and other items during the holidays.

While first responders lined the streets up and down the Sunshine Coast, boots in hand, asking drivers and pedestrians for change, the telethon aired on Saturday with performances by local musicians and dancers, as politicians and other personalities requested donations. The telethon aired on Eastlink Community TV.

The donations kept pouring in after Saturday and as of Monday, Dec. 10, $30,000 had been raised, according to Elves Club president Mike Doyle.

This is the first year that Gibsons Re/Max City Realty took over as organizers of Elves Club following former president Lynn Nestman’s resignation. “This will be a very busy week for sure,” said Doyle in an email following the event. The cut-off date for those applying to receive gift cards is Dec. 11. Last year, 680 households applied for and received gift cards.
