After hundreds of photos and stories, meetings and interviews, payrolls and page proofs, associate publisher Cathie Roy is retiring from Coast Reporter.

This edition, Jan. 2, will be her last edition managing the newspaper.

Roy will still be part of the Coast Reporter team in a freelance capacity, working on special projects, writing columns and contributing photos, and will maintain her leadership role as editor of our popular Sunshine Coast Life magazine.

Coast Reporter staff hosted a retirement luncheon for Roy on Dec. 19 where she was presented with numerous gifts and accolades.

“Wow, where does time go? It seems just yesterday that Cathie Roy walked into my life and changed the course of our business,” said publisher Peter Kvarnstrom. “In 1998 The Reporter was just one year old when Cathie joined our team as our administrator (chief collector). Over the years Cathie devoted herself to our business and our community. After stints in sales and sales management, Cathie left us (temporarily) to pursue her love of journalism through to a diploma.

“Since those early days, Cathie has made a huge contribution to our organization and the communities she has served. Cathie has truly left us all in a much better place. From all of us at Coast Reporter, we thank you for all you have done. Our community thanks you even more. You have risen to the challenges and opportunities and worked tirelessly, simply because the work you have done truly matters.”

Editor Ian Jacques echoed Kvarnstrom’s thoughts.

“Cathie was not just a boss — she was a leader, a mentor, a colleague and a friend,” Jacques said. “I don’t have enough time to count the number of hours we spent in conversation. Good or bad, personal or professional, Cathie was always there when you needed her. I consider her like a second mother. I wish her all the best, and I’m truly going to miss her. Coming to the office just won’t be the same.”

As we say goodbye to Roy, Kvarnstrom is delighted to introduce Yvonne Paulson as the new general manager of Coast Reporter as of Jan. 2.

“Yvonne has done a great job for us on the revenue side of our business. Yvonne will retain those responsibilities and will now have overriding responsibility for our day-to-day operations,” he said.
