Capilano University names kálax-ay regional director

Capilano University has named Micki McCartney as regional director of kálax-ay, the Sunshine Coast Campus. She started in the new role on Oct. 7.

“McCartney will provide oversight and leadership for all aspects of the campus operations and facilities on the Sunshine Coast, in collaboration with other university departments,” the university said in a release.

McCartney, who grew up in Sechelt, previously spent 13 years at Vancouver Island University (VIU). Her jobs included coordinator of the Centre for Experiential Learning and Career Services, administrator of an Indigenous Intern Leadership program and acting campus manager at the Powell River campus. She also participated in Indigenization efforts at VIU (working groups, learning circles, and course development) and taught and co-taught courses aligned with work-integrated learning and co-op education. She serves as chair of the Accountability Council for Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning – BC.

In her new role McCartney will liaise with the Sechelt (shíshálh) First Nation, School District No. 46, the local business community and other key stakeholders.

She holds a Master of Arts in Leadership and Training from Royal Roads University and is currently a doctoral candidate (EdD, Organizational Leadership) at Meridian University.
